Guest Post - saving money this Christmas

*Here are some tips for saving money during the Holidays from HowToSaveMoney.com.au. Their website contains a lot of great articles and tips on being frugal and keeping in line with your budget. I hope this helps you as you shop for gifts this holiday!*

How To Have A Blast On Christmas Without Spending Too Much

Christmas is around the corner but you haven’t recovered from the budget blowout of Halloween. What to do? According to Forbes, the average American spends $1000 on Christmas if they celebrate the holiday season at home and $2000 if they travel. And that’s after the 2008 economy crash.

Despite the fancy parties you see on TV, celebrating Christmas need not be a costly affair. Let’s look at the 5 main areas of a Christmas celebration and how you can save.

The Food
Food can be a big expense during Christmas, especially if you’re planning to throw a party where you invite the whole extended family. But did you know that in the UK, 230,000 tonnes of festive food worth around 275 million pounds are wasted. Minimize waste alone and you can shave a good portion of your Christmas spending. Here are 3 tips on how to do that:
  1. Plan ahead and make your guests RSVP so you know how many people to cook for.
  2. Buy your food loose instead of pre-packaged so you don’t end up with more than you need.
  3. Christmas grocery shopping is more dangerous than everyday grocery shopping because you’re more prone to impulse purchase at this time. An extra bag of chocolate for the party? Sure, why not. Two more bottles of coke? Absolutely. Make a list and keep to it to prevent budget blow out.
  4. “Just in case” never happens. If you want a backup, get something frozen so you can keep it even if it never gets used.
If you still have waste at the end of the day, pack them up for tomorrow! Love Food Hate Waste has plenty of leftovers recipe ideas.

If cutting out waste hasn’t do the job, here are more tips to consider:
  1. Buy raw ingredients only and cook the meals yourself - if you’re so inclined. Cooking together can be the great activity the whole family can enjoy. Plus, it will take the whole day so you don’t have to worry about extra activities!
  2. Buy generic instead of branded groceries. Studies have shown no difference in the quality of the product in most cases. In fact, most of them come from the same supplier anyway.
  3. Don’t be sucked into “special offers”. If you need only one pack, buy one pack for $2.50 instead of two packs for $4.00. You’d still have saved $1.50. $1.50 may not sound much but multiply them by the amount of food you buy and you get the idea.
The Gifts
Gifts is the single bigger expense in Christmas according the Forbes article. With good reason - most people expect expensive presents so they feel the need to give one too. But corny as it sounds, it’s the thought that counts. If you don’t want to appear as a cheapskate, here’s what you can do:
  1. Keep to what’s proven: secret Santa. Chances are your friends will also think it’s a good idea but dare not tell you about it. Instead of buying 10 gifts, now you only need to buy 1.
  2. Make an agreement among yourselves to stick to gifts a certain amount - say, $20 - or below.
  3. If you still can’t afford 10 $20 gifts, make an agreement that only handmade gifts count. Even today, 10 years later, I still have the wooden car my dad carved. If carpentry is not one of your skills, this is a good time for you to learn a new skill. Many skills can be learned online, for free - like baking or even book-binding (who doesn’t want a Frodo-style journal!)
The Decorations
Keep decorations modest - especially the tree. A real, average sized tree would set you back for about $41.50. That’s not including the lights, the trinkets and the little angle (or cross) at the top of the tree. And oh, the socks, the Santa suit you need to rent and the dancing elves.

Decorations can add up because in isolation, those items seem tacky. So most people decide to “go all out”.

If you insist on decorating the house, do it the Old Way - use natural elements. Pick wild flowers, use pine cones, scoop up snow and put it in a bowl, use branches. Even brown leaves make great decoration if you have access to them. Don’t forget the cards you received from your friends, families and children either because they all make great decoration if you stick them on a wall.

And if you want that “holiday” touch, tie everything in your house with a red bow and suddenly it’s Christmas.

The Activities
In the beginning of the article I wrote that families who travel during Christmas spend almost twice those who stayed at home. It makes sense - it’s the peak season. Not only will you pay more, you’ll also have to suffer from long queues and congestion. Yet most people go through that anyway.

Yet the most memorable Christmas I’ve had is a camping trip with my family, not the trip to Egypt or Caribbean. We traded stories during the campfire, gazed up on the stars and feasted on BBQ delicacies. In the morning, I chopped wood with my dad and went hiking with my brother thereafter, while my sister helped my mother with preparing the food.

It didn’t cost much but it bought more than what money can.

pitter patter

I love the sound of Ande's little feet pitter pattering up and down the hallways of our house.
He never walks anywhere, even from one room to the other.
He's always running excitedly about parking cars here and there.
It is like this all the time, but right now it has gotten me thinking of Christmas...
The way my brother, sister, and I used to run from my parents room into the living room with such anticipation on Christmas morning.

Pitter patter...pitter patter...

We're going to get our Christmas tree on Saturday and start with all the decorations.
I don't exactly have the best holiday stuff...and I need to figure out a good, budget-friendly, way to beef up my decoration supply.
But, for today, I'll just dream and drool over all of the cool things other people are making this month.

Most of all, I'm in need of some new stockings.
I made some last year, but I only made 3. We need another one.
They are expensive to buy, so I would love to make some again this year, but I just don't know if I'll have the time.
I would also love for them to match, and be something simple enough that I can make more as our family grows.
I might even crochet them...? Tacky? I don't know.
Oh...and they need to be BIG too...=)

Here are some fun ideas from Pinterest...

{I love that these all match, but aren't exactly the same..also that they have names on them.}
(photo

{I love the simplicity of these...that's timeless, but I'm thinking the burlap wouldn't have enough stretch.}

{Here's a crochet stocking...still contemplating if I like this or not. Atleast it would be easy for me and cheap.}

{And these are just my favorite, except for the little pom poms...and the price. Come on Walmart!}

I'll let you know what I decide...
(or maybe I won't, because I usually forget to update on posts like this.)

Snapshots

In an attempt to quiet Ande's cars and trucks obsession...we've tried to incorporate other things into our daily routine.

Like, getting outside...

and getting a dinosaur book at the library instead of our usual book about trains...

and using toys that often get left by the wayside.

I love that Ande loves something, but I want him to know that he is good at other things too.

Happy cyber Monday to you all.
Don't spend too much money...
I'm planning to purge a whole bunch of stuff from our house before Christmas comes around.

Friday Finds {pumpkin lust cake}

I had a nice relaxing Thanksgiving with family, I hope yours was just as nice. I did some thanksgiving crafts and coloring with Ande and tried to teach him about what it means to be thankful for things. I'm pretty sure he understood...so then I asked him what he was thankful for and he said "ears." so now I'm thinking either he didn't get it, or he is just so profound...

Have you had enough food lately? I hope not because check out this pumpkin recipe I found. It looks like my kind of dessert- not quite a pie, or a cake...just yummy goodness.

The Pumpkin Lust Cake by Sweet Treats and More

Another great thing about this recipe is that it seems so easy, which is good for cooking challenged people like me! I really dislike when it takes longer to cook my food than it does to eat it.

And now....good night. This has been a long and wonderful weekend so far. It's funny how doing a whole lot of nothing over the holidays can be so exhausting! The boys were exhausted too...and with the husband off camping tonight, it's an early bed time for all of us! Happy Thanksgiving!

Snapshots {goals and happy thoughts}

I didn't take any pictures last week, I can hardly believe it.
But, since Owen decided to make it a goal to figure out how to roll over this morning (success!), I decided I should also make some goals.

{1} Friday is laundry day. I CAN'T STAND when my laundry spills over into the weekend, or even the next week. It's a one day only kinda thing. I'm saving money, right? Well...I can't believe myself. Lately, I'm still putting laundry away from the week before by the time Friday rolls around. So, my goal is to make sure all of our clothes are put away before Monday. I'll start next week...

{2} I need to exercise more. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to working out at the gym. I go to the gym a lot, but that doesn't mean anything. I'm determined to learn how to run. Yes, learn how to run. I prance. Everybody makes fun of me for it. I need to stop being a pansy, turn on the "tom boy" switch that has got to be somewhere inside of me, and just run (well...jog...or wog...or maybe just fast walk). I started today, I was jogging for a good 4 minutes, until I had to pee. I didn't want to embarrass myself so...the real jogging will have to start tomorrow.

{3} Eat better...as in, stop eating all the leftover marshmallows from our campfire the other night while I'm sitting here typing this.

{4} Make my blog more interesting. I know, I talk about the boys A LOT. My kids are not my only interest. Since Owen was born, I haven't been very crafty, and when I have, it hasn't turned out very good because I rushed through it. I have some ideas...now I just need to organize my time and put them in place. I do have a great crochet series starting up in January and I am SO excited. I've been doing free crochet patterns for a while now, my Get Hooked! series, and I wanted to beef it up a little bit. Starting the first week of January (through the end of February) I will be starting up with a new series I like to call...

Each week I will be posting a free crochet tutorial (whether by me or a guest poster). Each tutorial will have something to do with things magical, fantastical, and fairy tail-ish. Just think...crowns...capes...wands...and more! Get excited, cuz I am!

Ok...my newly rolling baby is also teething...which makes for a sad, unhappy napper. Peace.

From socks to leggings

Isn't this the coolest idea you've ever seen?

Yep. They are socks, turned into leggings.
This is another, "Why didn't I think of that?" kind of project.

This idea is from Sew 4 Bub.

I loved the idea so much, so I went out and got some cute argyle socks and made some.
Well, until I ran out of serger thread.
I totally think baby boys can pull off leggings. Right? Brown and blue argyle?
Yes.

Christmas deadline

Christmas is coming up SO fast.
It's 75 degrees outside, so I the fact that it's the middle of November just BLOWS my mind.
Anyways...
Christmas is in a few short weeks and if you want to give something from my shop, you only have 3 weeks left to order, so don't wait!

In other news...

Owen is 3 months old now as of last Friday.
Talk about time going by fast...

He's still cute (even though he's balding like an old man).

He's still cute, and Ande's still sneaky.

The latest:
"Mom, I just love you so much. Can I have some candy? Because, I just love you so much!"
or it's,
"Mom, you are SO good at making lunch. Can I have some chocolate?"

a vintage refashion part 1

I found this amazing vintage dress at my Granny's house this weekend.

It used to be my Great Grandmother's, circa 1950 something.

It's quite big on me and it needs a little work.
The white trim isn't so white anymore, but I think a little dry cleaning,
and a little cinch here and there will do the trick!
I am still debating whether to have a pro alter it for me, or if I should do it.
The dress has seems on the sides, and some contouring and pleats on the front.
Once I figure out where to cut, I think I'll be fine.
Any refashionistas out there with any ideas?

Sunday Snapshots {the weekend}

We spent the weekend convincing Ande that he was magic.
We rented a van for the drive up to the mountains.
We told Ande that if he said "Open Sesame!" the door would magically open.
He even did a little finger swish and leg kick every time he said it.
And what do you know? The door magically opened by itself.

Notice how my Sunday Snapshots always ends up being posted on Mondays?
Well, there are gonna be a few changes around on this here blog.
Because I want to make sure my weekends are spent giving as much attention to my family as possible,
Sunday Snapshots is now going to be just simply, Snapshots.
Every Monday, I'll post a few shots of my fam and a bit of what we were up to the week before.
And that is just the beginning as far as changes go!
I've got a little something up my sleeve for the next year for all my crochet fans out there.
I'll be explaining that later this week.

Happy Monday kids!

pumpkin mums

I get to spend the weekend here:

Jealous?

We're spending the weekend with my Grandma up in the mountains of N.C.
The colors are absolutely gorgeous this time of year.
I can't wait to take it all in.

I wish I could have some of that same beauty in my own house.
The golds, reds, and oranges are so warm and inviting.

I am not a genius decorator myself, but I love when people decorate with flowers.
How convenient that one of my favorite flowers grow with those same bright and glowing colors?
Mums.
I have yet to buy any this year...
but I love them.

So, I was browsing around at pictures of fall and chrysanthemums and I stumbled upon a very interesting fall decorating technique.

Pumpkin Mums.

Or, mums in pumpkins.

This idea is so ridiculous and amazing at the same time.

Do you fill up the pumpkin with water?
Do you put soil in it?
I'm intrigued, and I think I wanna try it.

It's almost the weekend.
I'm going to spend mine enjoying family and the beauty that is FALL.

I don't know how it happened.

Things were really crazy when Owen was born.
I was stressed out.

I was worried that Ande wasn't getting enough attention.

I was worried they wouldn't nap at the same time and I'd never get a minute alone.

And I was worried that Owen would eat for an hour and still be hungry.

Somewhere along the way, in all that stress and worry, Owen stopped nursing.
I don't know how it happened.
The satisfaction that he couldn't find from me, came much easier with a bottle.
He starting drinking formula, and I started to calm down a little.
What used to take 1 1/2 hours, now only takes 5 minutes.
I have more time for myself, and more time for Ande.

But I'm still worried...
Is he still going to bond with me?
Does he notice when I walk into the room?
Will he love me as much as Ande does?
I don't know.

Sunday Snapshots {smiles all around}

Owen worked on learning how to grab things this week.

And giggling.
And just being cute all around.

Ande wanted a turn at being cute too...

I told him to "smile big."
That kid has one big mouth!

scallops and lace crochet cowl

This is a brand spankin' new item from my shop!

It is soft and cozy, perfect for warming up on a blustery fall day.
I made one for myself, and have been dying to wear it.
The weather around here hasn't been quite cold enough for scarves yet,
but I couldn't wait any longer and wore it to church last week anyways.

(I was inspired by THIS pattern from Lion Brand, but I tweaked it up here and there to make it my own.)

Now, I'm going to settle down with my ice cold diet dr. pepper and enjoy the peace and quiet that is nap time.
Happy Wednesday!

sloshy pumpkins

It's too bad that icy cold rain washed away most of the trick or treaters yesterday.
Luckily, we already had a weekend full of Halloween fun.

We started with our annual visit to Nan and Pops...

Where Ande got something even better than candy...

And Owen got something even better than donuts...

We made our rounds to Granny's house where Ande got some candy corn.
I asked him what they were and he said "lighthouses."
Go figure.

We finished off the night with a trunk or treat party at church.
Ande spent most of the time running around in circles with his best buddy.
But, his pumpkin basket is full, and so is his tummy.
Maybe it's best that it rained tonight.

Happy Halloween!
