Get Hooked! { Lovely Lace Button Cowl }

This crochet pattern doesn't have anything to do with my "Think Happy Thoughts" series, but is just a fun, wintry pattern for your viewing and crocheting pleasure.

I actually entered a crochet contest over at, About Crochet.
She challenged us to create a pattern using a rarely known stitch, the Chain Single Crochet (ch.sc).
You can find out all about the stitch, here, and the rules for the contest, here.
I jumped at the chance to try out something new.

Here is what I came up with:

(Click above for the free pdf pattern)

Unfortunately, I didn't do such a great job following directions for the contest, and therefore will no longer be entered to win, but I am still so glad that I tried out this new stitch.
I didn't know what it was going to be when I started, and am very pleased with what it turned into!

I used Carron Simply Soft yarn in Bone.
The color is interestingly brown, tan, and a little yellow all at the same time.
I used one of the extra buttons from my favorite yellow coat in hopes that I can wear them together!

The pdf for this pattern is already linked above, in case you wanted a file that you could download and keep in a folder somewhere. But for anyone else, here are the written instructions:

  4. This is beautiful. I have a question. You wrote in step 2: In same ch (2 ch.sc, ch 1, 3 ch.sc).
    It seems that you want me to do a sc, ch 1, and sc all in the same chain. But I'm not sure what "2 ch" and "3 ch" means. In step 3, you said: In ch 1 space (2 ch.sc, ch 1, 2 ch.sc). Once again, what does "2 ch" refer to? I'm sorry that I'm so mixed up about this but I haven't come upon this before. Thanks for helping me out.

  5. At the very beginning, immediately after chaining 91, you say to ch1 (at the beginning of Step 2). Do you really mean to add another chain then? This is a very pretty little cowl/collar and I hope to figure out your directions. It all seems so clear to us when we've just done it, right? :)

  6. Linda and aardvark- Thank you for your questions. Both of you have similar questions so let me see if I can clear things up for you guys!

    Before step one, there are directions for completing a stitch called the "chain single crochet" which is abbreviated as "ch.sc" This is a stitch that was taught to me by the blogger who's contest I was entering at the time. So, for example, when the pattern says, "1 ch.sc" it is asking for you to complete one chain-single-crochet stitch, not 1 chain, and then a single crochet. Does that make sense? This also applies to steps 2 and 3 where it says (2 ch.sc, ch 1, 2 ch.sc) it is asking for (2 chain-single crochets, chain 1, 2 more chain-single crochets).

    I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.
