on motherhood and change

I feel like a huge part of motherhood is learning to accept change.

First, you have to change the way you previously lived your life. You're not just thinking about yourself anymore. You have to plan ahead for outings to the store, schedule your day according to nap times, and learn to drop what your doing at a moments notice to rush a little one to the potty.

Then, once you figure out how to survive taking care of tiny humans, you learn that those tiny humans are constantly growing, learning, and challenging those schedules and routines that you set in place.

As soon as you think you have it all figured out, they wake up bigger, smarter, and more curious than the day before.

The other day, I sat on the couch quietly watching Ande as he played with his brothers. He was looking so tall and he was patiently teaching the little ones how to play a certain way. He is growing up before my eyes and for the first time, I wasn't completely sad about it. I was actually kind of excited. It suddenly felt like such a blessing to have an older child to help me teach and take care of the younger boys. It was such a blessing to have another curious mind to keep me company on days when I might not get to be around other adults.

So I guess, motherhood is more than just learning to accept change. It is learning to embrace it.
