crochet love {criss cross baby beanie}

You may remember the above picture from my post about Milo at 3 weeks old.
Milo needed a good, warm hat (it being winter and all)
and it took me forever to decide what kind of hat to make him.
I didn't want to make any sort of animal hat (like an elephant beanie
because I needed something a little more practical.
The animal hats are great for older babies, costumes, and photo shoots,
but for a newborn who wriggles a lot because he hates the car seat? Not so much.
I finally chose to make a simple little skull cap beanie with a little texture in the criss-cross stitch pattern,
and a cute sailor button to finish it off.

The way I made this hat is really easy, so I didn't write up a fancy pattern this time.

If you want to make one too here is what I did:

1. Start by working in the round with double crochets, just like you would with a simple beanie.

Round 1- 12 dc
Round 2- (2 dc in each st)
Round 3- (2 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc)
Round 4- (2 dc, 1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc)
Round 5- (2 dc, 1 dc, 1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc)

2. When you have completed the increase rounds that you need (I did 5 total increase rounds), start with the criss cross pattern which is:

Ch 2. *Skip the next st. 1 dc in the next st. 1 dc into st you just skipped (working around the post of the last dc). 1 dc in next st. Repeat from * around.

3. Work several rounds, depending on the size you need your hat to be (I did 6 rounds with the criss cross stitch). Finish off with a couple single crochet rounds.
4. Add a cute button or ribbon and you're done!

The criss cross pattern that I keep referring to is the same one I used to make the crochet wash clothes.
Oh, and just in case you were wondering, I totally made up the name "criss cross" for this stitch.
Does this stitch have an actual name? I don't know.

Milo loves his little hat. At least, that's what I pretend.
I want to make a couple for the big boys, but they can't seem to keep a hat on so I might not waste the yarn.

Any questions? Or, if you made a criss cross baby beanie of your own, I'd love to see it!

  2. So cute! I love the button on the hat. This stitch looks really interesting. I'll have to add it to my "must try" list.
